How did you get into starting your own business?

For quite a few years, long hours, high pressure and a fast pace were par for the course for me. Now, I always refer to that time as ‘my past life’. From graduating, my career always centred around working in big creative agencies on blue-chip brands. And don’t get me wrong, I loved it! However, as long as I can remember, I always aspired to be my own boss. I thrive on hard work and the thrill of cracking a creative problem, but I felt it would be more rewarding to work hard for myself. Once I had my children, I started doing bits of brand strategy and design work here and there. All through referrals from past colleagues, clients and friends. It snowballed, and eventually White Space took shape.

What are you currently working on?

What I love most about what I do is the variety. I could be working on commercial vehicle hire one minute, pregnancy and birth services the next and then property investment after that! No two days are the same. At the moment I’m loving focusing on two very different and exciting branding projects. One is a brand-new real estate offering, looking to shake up the hefty high street brand status quo. The other is a brand refresh for an amazing female duo who offer coaching programs and resources to women in business. Watch this space…

What do you love about your work?

I love helping businesses and brands find their authentic identity. All brands have a unique story, many don’t tell that story in the most compelling, magnetic or inspiring way. I love finding that ‘white space’, building the narrative around it for the brand and then bringing it to life. Whether that be through identity, online presence or printed media; whatever touch points are needed to reach the ideal client. I love the ‘ah ha’ moment of really getting under the skin of a brand, then seeing it come to life, in line with its true purpose. It’s an honour to be part of the journey with the business founder or brand owners; a journey that leads them to feeling reignited, reconnected and re-inspired by their brand. That’s what lights me up!

What inspires you?

I get inspired by others who have followed their purpose; they’re focused on a clear mission and they’re striving every day to make it happen. People who get sh*t done and they’re authentic, open and generous along the way. I find that drive, determination and passion really motivating. Being surrounded by positive, goal-driven people is good for me, it makes me want to keep striving for my goals too

What's the best advice you have ever been given?

I think there would have to be two bits of advice that have always stayed with me and continue to resonate with me daily. The first is you ALWAYS have a choice. Whether that’s how you choose to interpret or respond to something, how you choose to react to a situation and move forward or how you choose to view and tackle a challenge. Knowing you have control over your response and your actions is very empowering. The other was when I was 13. I had a job in a little tea room serving teas, coffees and cakes all day. Every weekend I went along did the job and came home shattered with my little envelop of cash. One day my Dad picked me up and I saw him talking to the owner. That can’t be good I thought! When we got in the car to go home, he told me he was so proud to receive such glowing feedback about my work ethic. He said to me, ‘If a job’s worth doing Becky, it’s worth doing properly’. It’s an oldie but it’s a goodie, and I have literally lived by it ever since. Thanks Dad x
