Check out Stella Insurance!

At 24, Sam White rebuffed conformity and set up her first insurance company, acutely aware that it was traditionally considered a male-dominated, almost-sterile industry.

Over 20 years, she has built a number of businesses in the UK, turning over in excess of  18 million pounds and employing over 200 people. She believes in building businesses that work for everyone: the people they employ, the communities they operate in and the customers they serve… Sam passionately believes that we need more women in this environment, in the financial services sector, and in politics. Because whoever controls the money makes the rules. Which leads me us to Stella; a brand that’s rewriting the rules…

ARNA Talks to Sam White, founder of Stella Car Insurance - women leaders, work and laptop bags for women, empowered

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

I'm a founder and CEO of several insurance based businesses both in the UK and Australia, my purpose is to build businesses that positively contribute to more than just the bottom line, and to show other women that its possible to succeed in even the most male dominated businesses.

What is something you've learned about yourself this year?

I don’t need to travel as much as I have been, and working from home can be hugely productive.

What do you love about yourself?

I love my resilience and open mindedness.

When we do reach gender equality, what does this world look like to you?

I read a great feminist quote that said she would know we had reached equality when she looked around the board table and saw as many mediocre women as men, not mine but I loved it. For me it is as simple as a level playing field for all, I still feel there is a long way to go.

What do you believe are the behaviours that hold women back?

I think women tend to be more concerned with what others think of them, they also tend to be more self critical, both of these behaviours I believe massively hold you back in business.

What has been your boldest move to date?

Jumping on a plane to Australia on a whim and then subsequently setting up a new business over there and having children.

What's your call to action for women?

Be brave, trust yourself and support each other.
